It must be clarified that there are different versions of the Mercedes-Benz ML 350. One of the most innovative in many aspects is the model 350 CDI 4Matic. Regarding the technical data, the displacement is of 2.987 cc. Also, the power of the engine is 224 horses. The traction is integral and the maximum speed reached is 215 km / h. On the efficiency of the Mercedes-Benz SUV, it is interesting to know that its average consumption is 9.2 liters per 100 km / h. The gearbox is of model 7G-Tronic.

To move in Brazil, diesel-powered cars must comply with Portaria 23/94 of the defunct National Fuel Department (DNC), which requires that the vehicle has a load capacity of more than one ton, 4×4 traction and reduction box. The Mercedes-Benz ML 350 CDI with diesel engine does not have this last item, but managed to pass the legislation as a jeep and was homologated to drive here. According to the brand, the guarantee was granted because the model has an electronic system that changes the relations of the exchange, damper and motor for off-road driving, functions similar to the reduction box. Lack of space for commands

There are so many technological features that the printing is lacking space for the commands. When Mercedes-Benz launched the first M-Class in 1997, its original intention was to replace the classic G-Class . However, he found a segment of the market, the SUV, which was able to accept all kinds of proposals and niches. The third generation of the ML began to develop in 2006 and had its global presentation in 2011. It took a while to reach Argentina, but since April it is sold with only one version: ML 350 4Matic , with a price of 120 thousand dollars.

OUTSIDE

With respect to its predecessor, the new M is longer (two centimeters more, up to 4,803 millimeters) and wider (five centimeters more, up to 1,926 mm), but also lower (two centimeters less, up to 1,796 mm). It also increased its wheelbase by three millimeters (now 2,916 mm) and redesigned the passenger compartment to provide more space for the legs of the rear passengers. The ML 350 is sold in Argentina with the spectacular AMG sports package , consisting of front spoiler and chrome-plated rear diffuser, as well as 19-inch AMG wheels , with Continental 225/50 tires . Despite its aesthetics, it has a very good aerodynamic coefficient of only 0.32 .

Inside

The German brand always named the ML as “the Mercedes-Benz of the 4 × 4” . And that shows by just passing the threshold of the door. The design, materials and equipment convey a sense of luxury that is even a step above the already quite luxurious Class E ( read review ). The cabin is approved for five passengers and there is plenty of room for them. Back, it is possible to travel with legs crossed. A novelty of this third generation is that the backrest regulates its angle. However, the passenger in the middle will not be so comfortable, because his buttocks will rest on a cushion quite bulky. In addition, it will not have its own multimedia screen: there are two on the back and have a DVD player, in addition to numerous connections for headphones and external devices. The trunk is simply immense. It has 690 liters of capacity. And it can be extended up to 2,010 liters if the rear seats are folded. In addition, it has numerous holes to carry small objects without moving from their place.

Security

It comes standard with seven airbags (including knees for the driver), adaptive brakes with ABS, stability control, traction control and fatigue alert. Driving aids are numerous, but here we will mention three that debuted in this ML: the Pre-Safe system is a new generation. It is the program that detects the imminence of a crash or accident, and prepares the vehicle to suffer an impact. It is quite impressive, because it is activated, for example, if you are having fun in the gravel and you skid the vehicle excessively. Automatically, all the windows are closed, the passenger seat raises the backrest -if it is very reclined- and all the occupants feel in their body that increases the tension of the safety belt. It is to hold the passengers well, but also to warn the driver that the car does not like what he is doing. Last year, an ML 350 4Matic was subjected to crash tests by EuroNCAP . He obtained the maximum rating of five stars, with 96% protection for adults, 75% for children and 60% for pedestrians.

Engine and transmission

If the platform of the new M-Class turned the page of the Daimler-Chrysler alliance, its engine has not yet done so. The M276 that equips the ML 350 shares the same architecture with the Pentastar V6 of several American products. It is a V6 at 60 degrees, instead of the 90 degrees that had the M272 engine. This allowed to reduce the vibrations and to dispense with the axis of balance. It has 3,498 cubic centimeters of displacement and direct injection. It develops 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm of torque between 3,500 and 5,250 rpm. With respect to the ML 350 4Matic of previous generation, the engine now yields 34 more horses and 20 Nm extra.

Behavior

The ML is an impressive vehicle, from every point of view. But the image is not close to describing the sensation of handling it. The interior is isolated like a Patagonian vault and the engine is surprisingly smooth. But the first thing that attracts attention is the softness of the direction. It comes with an electromechanical assistance that, when stopped, has a servo that borders on the absurd. The steering wheel can be moved with one finger, without effort. And that was not a metaphor. Without being too soft, the ride is very smooth, typical of Mercedes-Benz. But, a few kilometers later, I felt a certain nostalgia for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland , which I drove three months ago ( read review ). The new ML arrives in Argentina only with conventional mechanical suspension, while the Overland offers a pneumatic suspension and also costs 31 thousand dollars less. The difference in walking is noticeable. And it has the possibility of varying the clearance of the floor of the body. Mercedes-Benz Argentina should offer the pneumatic system at least in option. Everything indicates that they are reserving it for the ML 63 AMG. The autonomy is guaranteed by a fuel tank that is equivalent to having your own oil well: 93 liters of capacity. The equation to contain the consumption of such a large, heavy and powerful vehicle is in the BlueEficiencytechnology . It is not a technological solution, but the set of many. Some of them are: the differentials with low friction level, the tires with lower rolling resistance and the function on demand of all the auxiliary groups.
